Vaginal yeast infections are a common concern for women worldwide. Some misconceptions associated with this condition have led to many women being hesitant to seek help. Understanding the basics of yeast infections is key to managing intimate health with confidence and proper care. Below is a simple overview to help you better understand yeast infections.

What is a Yeast Infection?

A vaginal yeast infection (Candidiasis) is caused by an overgrowth of fungus called Candida at the vaginal area. Although it naturally exists in your body as part of your microbiome, any imbalance will cause infection.

Common Symptoms of Yeast Infection

Yeast infection symptoms can range from mild to moderate and include:

  • Vaginal rash: Itching and irritation in the vaginal area
  • Thick & white discharge: Can be watery or chunky and looks like curdled milk or cottage cheese
  • Redness or swelling: Especially around the vaginal opening
  • Pain & burning: Soreness, burning sensation (especially when urinating or during intercourse)
  • Little to no odour: Even if there is odour, it’s very mild

What Causes Yeast Infection?

  1. Wearing Tight or Non-Breathable Clothing

Synthetic fabrics and super tight clothing (like skinny jeans, pantyhose, or certain underwear) can trap heat and moisture, creating the perfect environment for yeast to grow.

  • Consuming Antibiotics

According to pharmacist, Emilie White, consuming antibiotics would kill all the bacteria in your body, including the good ones. The good bacteria that maintain the overall vaginal health would be eliminated, leading to a yeast infection due to the overgrowing of Candida.

  • Weak Immune System

The immune system functions as a defence mechanism to keep Candida present in a small amount. However, when your immune system is weak, your body won’t control the growth of Candida fungus, allowing it to multiply.

  • Poor Hygienic Practices

The improper wiping after using the toilet is one of the key causes. Wiping from back to front can transfer Candida and other bacteria from the anus to the vaginal area (yikes!). Other unhygienic practices include using scented feminine hygiene products, harsh cleansers (antibacterial) and infrequent changing of period pads which disrupt the natural pH balance.

  • Uncontrolled High Blood Sugar Levels

Yeast thrives on sugar, so when a person has high blood sugar levels, this creates a favourable vaginal environment for Candida to multiply.

💡 Did you know: High blood sugar level links to stress as stress releases cortisol, a hormone that raises the blood sugar level in your body.

How to Prevent Yeast Infection?

  1. Wear Breathable Underwear

This includes using underwear that are made of natural materials (cotton) to not trap moisture.

  • Consume Probiotics

Eating probiotics helps to restore the balance of the vaginal environment by controlling the growth of Candida.

  • Practise Gentle & Regular Hygiene

This includes changing out clothes regularly, even when it’s not sweaty! It’s crucial to maintain the overall cleanliness of your vaginal area to maintain a healthy balance of natural microflora.

  • Use Gentle & Unscented products

Use unscented feminine wash or sanitary products as they are gentler. Whereas the harsh scented ones often disrupt the vaginal environment, causing yeast infection to occur.

  • Maintain Overall Health

Your immune system is the primary defence against Candida overgrowth. Practices such as eating a healthy diet, having a regular sleeping schedule and releasing stress would help lower the blood sugar levels in you.
